The name means ‘big throat’. It is a canyon crossed by a river with the same name and covered in greenery: one of the most popular destinations for hiking enthusiasts. The regional park of Gutturu Mannu extends over the territory of ten Municipalities in the south-western part of Sardinia: three in the vicinity of Cagliari, Assemini, Capoterra and Uta, where the oasis of Monte Arcosu rises; seven others in the lower Sulcis, where there are the Piscina Manna – Is Cannoneris pools: Domus de Maria, Pola, Santadi, Sarroch, Siliqua, Teulada and Villa san Pietro.
In the park there is a larger forest in Italy: 35 thousand hectares of inestimable naturalistic value. You will be immersed in dense holm oak forests, in particular from 700 to one thousand meters high, you will see badgers and holly in the most remote crevices, you will admire beautiful specimens of cork in the central part. You will be intoxicated by the Mediterranean scrub that smells the air: carob trees, strawberry trees, heather, arborescent filliree, lentisks, myrtle and olive trees. In addition to the green expanse, the picturesque streams and springs will strike you. Enjoy the shade in the intense sunny days walks in spring and autumn among the sounds of nature. You will easily come across endemic species representative of the Sardinian fauna, such as the deer, the goshawk and the geotritone. The park is home to three oases of wildlife defense: Pantaleo, Gutturu Mannu and Monte Arcosu, owned by the WWF, where deer run free, and Piscina Manna-Is Cannoneris. The wild boar is the undisputed ruler, but there are also weasels, wild cats and foxes. While in flight it is not uncommon to see golden eagle, peregrine falcon and buzzard.
